We Took the BMW Z4 sDrive30i out in Palm Springs

BWM, the brand name is enough to conjure up an image of fun and luxury in the minds of the car enthusiasts. This review on the BMW Z4 sDrive 30i is written based on the test drive scheduled at BMW’s Test Fest a few moths back.

The all-new BMW Z4 sDrive30i is no doubt a fun car. More powerful and more expensive though, the Z4 M40i is not necessarily always the better option. This review is aimed at giving you a more accurate ideal of what it’s like to drive the new Z4.

Admittedly, the driving was not too thrilling when we took it out in Palm Springs. The unlucky circumstances should be blamed for that. BMW only had Z4s available to drive on the road and give us two routes. The one we took was a fantastic driving route, with serpentine roads running between rock formations. There’s nothing like taking a scenic route with stunning scenery in the background.

Let’s check out how the roadster is going to perform around the town:

Performance and Handling:

Powered by the turbocharged 2.0 liter engine, the Z4 produces 255 horsepower and 295 pound feet. Coupled with a ZF eight-speed automatic, the duo renders a modest performance. The Z4 feels genuinely quick given the context.

The Z4’s eight-speed automatic isn’t exactly crisp when left to its own devices, it mostly ticks through gears seamlessly without notice. The eight-speed reminds us of a dual-clutch in its most aggressive setting. The Z4’s steering feels quick and direct. Needless to say, regular BMW service and maintenance is required to keep the vehicle running strong.

Comfort:

The Z4 sDrive30i does not provide any additional support to the seats. The buckets are firm, harsh, and difficult to configure to your ideal seating position. The M Sport package adds lumbar support and the Premium package adds heating functionality. However, neither feature reduces the unrelenting stiffness you feel from the driver or passenger seat. And with the top up, the cabin is pretty compact.

Technology and Connectivity:

The all-new Z4 comes equipped with the 10.3 inch central touchscreen along with it crystal-clear graphics and clean layout. The iDrive rotary controller allows for easy and convenient navigation of the large screen while driving.

The 10.3 inch digital instrument cluster is not any less commanding. Navigation, radio, and vehicle readouts are to be found right at the driver’s fingertips.

Overall, the vehicle is impressive. To keep it in good condition, be sure to take it to the nearby BMW service Greensboro center for inspection and routine maintenance.
